An Ageing Workforce

Some 20% of Irish workers will be over the age of 55 by 2020; double their share in 2000.

Our analysis of the CSO's breakdown of the labour force by age group (see chart below) indicates an acceleration in the share of over 55s in recent years, as has happened in other markets.

The share of workers aged 45 and over will likely rise to half or more of those in paid employment by 2030.
